No one is born a Christian. I was an agnostic /atheist. I firmly believed in the lie called evolution. I had always been fascinated by the questions, ‘Why are we here?’ and ‘Where did we come from?
I avidly watched TV documentaries on evolution, and read books on how scientists perceived we came into existence - big bang theory, steady state, string theory, parallel universes! I found it all fascinating but at the end of the day I was puzzled! All this, seemed to me, to be just a pile of wildly conceived ideas with no proof.
Wild or not, I thought that the ’science’ I had been taught at school must know what I could not fathom out. If scientists said ‘this is so’, then surely they must be right. How could I, just an ordinary person – certainly not a scientist – doubt what they said? But I did, and kept looking, doubting and searching. I started to seriously believe that the ‘science’ I was reading might be wrong! At this time I also discovered that there were many scientists who firmly believe in the biblical view of creation - guys who also had PhDs.
This really got me thinking. My wife Elizabeth, had been a Christian for most of her life, and went to church regularly with our three young sons. I would occasionally go along but just for ‘special services’. Then one Sunday in 1999 I started to go regularly, I guess just to see if I could pick holes in what the vicar was saying.
Well, that didn’t happen. In fact, I found that I couldn’t pick holes in anything he said. More and more, everything he said started to make sense and I came to the realisation that Jesus really did die for me on the cross to take my sin and punishment. I finally asked Jesus to be the Lord of my life.
I started to pray, read and study the Bible with Elizabeth on a daily basis. We attended a home Bible study group which was a constant source of inspiration. As a family we prayed together and read the Bible every morning with our sons. In the book of Genesis I found all the answers that many scientists struggle to fathom out! My conclusion was: evolution is nonsense, creation is real.
Man’s moral instincts come from our Creator, the Lord God. Everything we see around us shows Design, Beauty, and Purpose.
The best part of being a Christian for me is knowing the Lord Jesus

The best part of being a Christian for me is knowing the Lord Jesus
, and having the sure knowledge that when I die I will go to heaven.
‘For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life’, John 3:16.
My parents were Christians, both becoming born again shortly after they retired. I was very privileged to be at my dear Mum’s bedside during February last year as she passed on after a long, three year, courageous battle with cancer. During that time she remained so positive and cheerful and I know was an inspiration to so many in similar circumstances on the island of Alderney where she spent the last ten years of her life.
We prayed together a lot during those last days of her life. In those final hours before she slipped away, my faith in the Lord Jesus was strengthened immeasurably. Because of her faith, and mine, I know without any doubt where she is now – at home with the Lord.
