Quote of the Day

Walk boldly and wisely....There is a hand above that will help you on.

Philip James Bailey
Why 40 days of Lent?

Lent is the period of forty days which comes before Easter in the Christian calendar, traditionally a time of fasting and reflection. Shrove Tuesday 5th February, or Pancake Day or Mardi Gras is the day before Lent begins. The British name of Pancake Day comes from the tradition of making pancakes to use up all the food that could not be eaten during Lent.
Ash Wednesday, 6th February is the start of Lent which traditionally marks the time Jesus spent in the wilderness. Though in the past people would ‘give things up for Lent’ Christians now often take part in special prayer and study groups to learn more about their faith and what Jesus Christ has done for them.
BBC Radio 4 together with Churches Together in Britain and Ireland (CTBI) are broadcasting Sunday Worship and Daily Services on the themes of Pathways of Prayer during Lent. BBC Local Radio will also broadcast special shows.
