A way outYour life’s a mess. You feel as if you’re on a one-way trip to somewhere you’d rather not go. But you don’t feel able to stop the ride. What if someone offers you a way out? Will you grab it with both hands – or not? Is it really possible to live a new, changed life? That’s the ongoing question in Watchers, a trilogy of novels set in the near future. The last in the series, Watchers 3: Countdown, has just been published by Verité CM Ltd. The final instalment In the books, it’s a bleak time, where if you are over 45, sick or in debt, you become surplus to requirements. That means removal from the nice ‘Clean’ society, and being dumped in the Old City – a desolate holding-place where you have to fight for your very survival. That’s if you escape the Watchers, the brutal security force, hitmen for a corrupt government. In Watchers 3: Countdown, author Sheila Jacobs presents the final instalment in the story of top Watcher Mike Merrick, who has been given the chance of a whole new life. The trouble is, the past doesn’t want to let him go. He’s got an implant, a tracker, and when it switches on his ex-comrades will be able to locate and destroy both Mike and his new friends – the outlawed David Drum sect, a Christian group who refuse to compromise with the ‘Clean’ society’s false religion, and face the death penalty. ![]() Mike’s brief was to terminate them – now he’s joined them. But there seems no hope of a happy ending. Or is there? Action adventure The books seem to be attracting the interest of Christians and non-Christians alike. ‘I was giving a talk at a library last year,’ says Sheila, ‘and they told me that while Watchers has a good female readership, it’s also proving popular with teenage boys.’ Why does she think this is? ‘Well, the subject, and the fast pace, I think. I went into a school recently to take a couple of creative writing workshops, and discovered that the boys’ literary interest seemed to be largely in the area of action adventure, and that’s what Watchers is. |
