After you say ‘I do’ So what is it like to be married to Bear Grylls voted the 7th coolest man in the UK? He’s instantly recognisable to many as an intrepid explorer and much-loved television personality, whose taste for adventure seems to know no bounds! But away from the camera and the challenges of extreme weather and landscape, Bear is a loving husband to Shara and a devoted father to their three boys Jesse, Marmaduke and Huckleberry. The family divide their time between a Dutch barge on the River Thames and a small private Welsh island. Shara Grylls’ little book of over 100 quotations about marriage doesn’t answer this question directly but it does showcase some sage advice on which she and Bear have drawn over the years in their own marriage – and now wish to share with others. ![]() The inspiration for this book came from Bear and Shara’s wedding preparations, when they asked their wedding guests to enclose with their invitation replies some words that might help the newly married Mr and Mrs Grylls. The advice that they received ranged from classic quotes to original advice, including poems, fiction, sayings, old wives’ tales and simple common sense. ‘Make your (wedding) anniversary the most memorable day of the year. Do something out of the ordinary,’ one friend wrote. With the added bonus of humorous cartoons by Charlie Mackesy, another wrote, ‘A good marriage requires you to fall in love many times, always with the same person.’ As Shara says in the foreword, ‘the outstanding quality that shines through this book is love. In the good times, in the hard times, love, being a friend when it really matters, protecting each other.’ Marriage Matters is published by Lion £5.99 – a great gift for a wedding or anniversary! |
