Quote of the Day

The whole of creation, with all of its laws, is a revelation of God.

Dean William Ralph Inge
Back to Church Sunday

Next month sees Britain’s churches gear up for a special Sunday.

There are many people who used to go to church – maybe as children to Sunday School, perhaps, or as young people or adults – but over the years they’ve lost the habit. Perhaps they’ve moved house, or become too busy with family life.

So Back to Church Sunday on September 26th is aimed at people like that. With the theme ‘Come as you are’, churches all over the country are preparing to welcome people back.

The idea isn’t to put on ‘special’ services, but to be extra-sensitive to how people coming in, perhaps for the first time in years, might be feeling – and for members of the congregation to make a point of inviting friends and neighbours.

One woman who returned and was pleasantly surprised is Marion Kellow, from Haversham. She says, “Churches to me were always cold, severe places in many ways, where you went and got preached at and told off on a Sunday – it wasn’t much fun. Now it’s different. There’s a variety of speakers and approaches. It’s very welcoming. I don’t remember church being like that in my youth.”

She adds, “Go on, give it a try – what have you got to lose?”
