Some people celebrate their 50th birthday with a big party. But Astrid Domingo Molyneux decided to cycle round the  world. Three years later she was welcomed back to her home in Almondsbury, South Gloucestershire, by a cheering crowd including local MP Steve Webb, one of her supporters. A  strid set out in May 2008. During her 20,000-mile solo global ride, she travelled through more than 20 countries, including Jordan, Iran, Oman and Tibet. But this was far from being just a holiday. Astrid works for the Centre for Deaf Studies at Bristol University, and undertook her epic journey in support of two charities: the Deaf Studies Trust, and The Leprosy Mission. As a Christian, the trip has been a very spiritual experience for her. During her adventure she wrote, ‘I really think of myself as being on a pilgrimage. The point of a pilgrimage is to become the person you are, rather than being the person you think you should be and also to perceive one’s purpose in life, thence to pursue it.’ The trip also gave her the chance to connect with the Christian community around the world.
