Thinking green helps AIDS orphanage

A church in Gloucestershire is helping the environment by thinking beyond its home comforts. Thanks to their ‘Carbon offset fund’, an AIDS orphanage in South Africa will have cheaper energy.

The Bethesda Methodist Church, Gloucestershire has won awards for their environmental work, and now they’ve raised cash to buy a solar roof panel for an AIDS orphanage in South Africa.

The green energy-boosting panel means that the Sukumawenze Orphanage in Durban can make use of the sizzling South African sunshine whilst slashing its energy bills and helping the environment.

It was made possible because of generous donations by the church members into a carbon offset fund.

‘We have been committed to cutting our carbon footprint for a decade,’ says Mark Boulton from the church, ‘and are signed up to the National Eco-Congregation Programme – http://www.arocha.org.uk

‘Backed by cash from the government’s Low Carbon Building Programme – http://www.lowcarbonbuildings.org.uk and the Church’s Circuit Advance Fund, our next fundraising venture is for a solar panel for our own church roof.’
