Quote of the Day

The purpose of Christianity is not to avoid difficulty, but to produce a character adequate to meet it when it comes. It does not make life easy; rather it tries to make us great enough for life.

Green Issues Every little helps

Seascale Methodist Church, in Cumbria, is an ‘eco-congregation’. Environmental issues feature in all areas of church life, from buildings, land and church management, to mission as the congregation engages with local and global communities.

The local minister Keith Bradshaw has really encouraged the congregation at Seascale and reports on just a few of the initiatives taken: • The church has led the community in three ‘Village Tidy and Beach Cleaning Days’.

• Many members help with regular gardening in the church grounds and invited Cumbria Wildlife Trust to help them maximise the potential of the church grounds for wildlife and flora.

• The church promotes regular community recycling and ensures careful use of energy including low-energy light bulbs and making sure that the church boiler is properly maintained.

• Church services have sometimes focused on waste, recycling and living more simply and, as a Fairtrade church, a Traidcraft stall is often available. Children played their part too and painted pictures for a special creation care service.

• The church encourages sustainable transport and provided refreshments to 75 cyclists celebrating the new SUSTRANS Hadrian’s Cycleway from Ravenglass to South Shields.
