Quote of the Day

This world is God's workshop for making men in.

As inflation continues to push up food prices, it’s easy to find that one of your biggest expenses is food, especially if you have a family. CAP has these top tips on how to get more for your money and make it go further:

1. Eat seasonally – fruit and veg that is in season is usually cheaper. (http://www.seasonalchef.com/cropcharts.htm)

2. Cook in large batches and freeze portions for another day. Meals like big stews, chilli con carne and soup can all work well when done this way.
3. Plan meals. Make a shopping list based on your meal plans! If you buy a large amount of one thing, plan meals that include it so it gets used up. Planning meals will not only reduce wastage but also reduce your shopping bills, as you are less likely to impulse buy.

4. Shop at your local market or farmer’s market – you can often get good deals by haggling. Also, find out when your local supermarket reduces stock for quick sale, and plan your shopping trips to coincide with that time.

5. Grow your own veg where possible – it’s easier than you might think and could be fun and educational for you and your children! Even if you don’t have a garden, you could grow herbs in a window box or in pots.

6. Switch from convenience meals to homemade – it’s not only cheaper but also better for you, as you control what goes into it!

7. Buy the less typical cuts of meat, e.g. Brisket/Silverside of Beef, or even offal (liver etc.), and put it in things like stew or soup that can be slow cooked.

8. Try vegetarian cooking – or, if you can’t live without meat, eat less than you normally would and use lentils or tins of beans to add bulk and protein to meals.

If you’re really struggling to manage and you find yourself missing meals, go to www.capuk.org or call 0800 328 0006 to find out if Christians Against Poverty can help you.
