| Christian Bushcraft |
First there was Ray Mears, then Bear Grylls. Now the ranks of the bushcraft masters have been joined by Jim Rutherford, from Bangor in Northern Ireland. He’s just launched a venture offering bespoke programmes for church youth groups and for Christians of all ages on the shores of Strangford Lough. On his courses participants will learn skills like the correct use of cutting tools, how to build individual and group shelters, fire-making (without matches!) and backwoods cooking. And if they want to, they’ll also learn more about God – and about themselves. Jim offers programmes based on bushcraft and survival, on youth development, or on the early Celtic spirituality practised by St Patrick and his successors. He’s been inspired by an American Christian writer. “The starting point for me was John Eldredge’s books which show the tremendous benefits people can derive from getting away from it all and getting into the wilderness to have some time alone with God,” he says. “I soon realised it was something that appealed to many people, especially men.” But he’ll cater for all ages, and mixed and all-female groups as well, he stresses.
