Life is an adventure in forgiveness.

cap chalk.jpgWhile many people look forward to the summer, for parents this can present an annual challenge of how to keep children entertained without breaking the bank. Here are some suggestions for cheap summer activities.

1. If the weather’s good, take a picnic to the local park or wood. The novelty of eating outside can be enough to get your children excited! Take a frisbee, a football and some books, and you’ve got a whole afternoon of fun. Your local council’s website will have information on public parks nearby.
2. If it’s really warm and you or your neighbours have a paddling pool or other outdoor toys, why not arrange for another family to come over for a morning or afternoon? Alternatively, you could arrange for one of you to look after all the children one day, and the other parent can return the favour another day.

3. Take the children to your nearest nature reserve or wildlife sanctuary. Many are free or very cheap, and may offer a wide range of activities, worksheets and information. It’ll be fun for the children, and who knows – you might learn something too! Go to www.naturalengland.org.uk or www.wild-net.org/ukwebsite/TWTReserves.aspx to find one near you.

4. Visit an English national museum – entry is free and there can be many hours of educational fun for the whole family. They aren’t all in London, either – there are quite a few in the North in places like Liverpool, Bradford, Leeds and York.

5. Buy a pack of pavement chalks from a craft shop or toy shop. You can get a big tub for just a few pounds, and your children can then spend hours creating masterpieces on the driveway or garden path!

6. Set up a scavenger hunt in your house or garden by hiding some of their smaller toys (maybe toy cars or toy animals) and writing a set of clues for them to follow. Then encourage them to set one up for you!
