Walk boldly and wisely....There is a hand above that will help you on.

Christians Against Poverty - Top tips for autumn

By Marianne Clough

Days are getting shorter, winter is a stone’s throw away and for many it can be a depressing time – but it needn’t be.

Half term is around the corner, conkers are on the trees and if we greet it rather than just mourn the summer, October can be fun!

Here are some ideas to keep your spirits up – and your bank balance in the black!

1. October is the best time to plant bulbs. Plan for a glorious spring! Or grow some presents for Christmas.

2. Ask some friends round, make a huge pasta bake and get chatting! You could add in a DVD or some games. Why not make it a regular thing?

3. Learn to knit and see what you can make. Visit www.learn2knit.co.uk for some great tips to information on where to find a knitting group near you.

4. Put aside a couple of hours and see how much you can save money on your bills by shopping around. A bit of housekeeping could earn you some spare cash.

5. Autumn is a great time of year for going on a course and learning everything from car maintenance to Greek to Hip hop! You’ll meet new people and may be save cash if you can help yourself with a problem in the future. Find out what your local college is offering.

6. What about doing CAP Money and learn how to get on top of your finances? It’s just three sessions long and you’ll learn how to budget before Christmas comes! See www.capmoney.org to find one close to where you live.

7. Prepare for a cosy and efficient winter by seeing if you can get any good deals on insulating your home. Visit www.energysavingtrust.org.uk to see if there’s a bargain waiting for you!

8. The World Conker Championships take place on the second Sunday in October in Oundle, Northamptonshire. Go along or hold your own!

9. You can’t beat blackberry and apple crumble – surely one of God’s greatest gifts! Get picking for a cheap and healthy feast.

10. Where to go with the kids at half term? Enjoy Free Entry at: Yorkshire Sculpture Park near Wakefield, The Winter Garden in Sheffield, the Science Museum in London and plenty more besides. Check out www.visitbritain.co.uk or www.visitlondon.com

If you want to find out if there is a CAP Money course near you visit www.capmoney.org

It is free to attend and you will be steered through the simple budgeting plan by people who care about you from your local church.
