“Knife bins are making a difference and helping to prevent youth crime,” according to Michael Smith, founder of Word 4 Weapons. Inspired by the increasing numbers of stabbings and killings among young people across the UK, the charity focuses on encouraging young people to get rid of their weapons and embrace a positive lifestyle. In partnership with the Salvation Army, the Ascension Trust, the Christian Police Association and churches, Word 4 Weapons began by placing knife bins across London where people could dispose of their blades. In exchange they would receive a bag labelled “All I Need” which contains a Bible, a Cops and Robbers comic, and much more to help them turn their lives around. ![]() Word 4 Weapons now has 10 knife bins strategically placed across several London boroughs. Michael wants to see 10 more across London by the end of the year. “When I turn on the news I see people of different races, faiths and cultures that have been affected by knife crime. That is why this needs to reach out to all people.” So far the knife bins have collected more than 500 weapons, some of which have been melted down and made into pieces of art and key-shaped awards to present to young people who have turned their lives around. |
