Author Ruth Wills is hoping that primary school children across the country will go M.A.D this summer for Scripture Union’s new holiday club Showstoppers!
 The children will make new friends, play games, and learn from the Bible. They will also have the opportunity to engage in an arts based workshop enabling them to explore the story in greater depth. These range from Music, Art and Drama to Digital photography and Dance. Each day features one ‘must-know’ Bible story like David and Goliath, Daniel and the Lions’ Den, Jesus’ birth, and his crucifixion and resurrection.
Around 4000 churches across the UK are expected to use Scripture Union’s fun-packed holiday club material this summer – so it’s likely that there will be a club near you. Others may offer different activities so it’s worth checking your local church.
Showstoppers! holiday clubs usually run for 5 days – with each session lasting around 21⁄2 hours. Children aged 5-11 of any faith and none will be welcomed into a safe and fun environment. No matter how big the club, the children will have time in a small group to get to know other children and adults and share their views.
Ruth Wills, the author of Showstoppers! tells us a little of what’s in store without spoiling any surprises. Ruth is an experienced music teacher who has worked for Scripture Union for 11 years. She has lots of great ideas to help children think and learn more about God: ‘The workshops aim to encourage children to make their own response to what they’ve learnt in the Bible story. The idea is that the children will come up with some ideas themselves and there are no end results.’
The holiday club material is flexible to work with the size and make-up of each club. There’s a DVD in which the Bible stories are acted out - rehearsal style. ‘It’s a very clear retelling of each story - close to the Bible text,’ Ruth says. ‘Or people can use the resource scripts to tell the story. I’ve provided enough tools for churches so that everyone is covered.’
