 The Alpha Course – what guests sayHave you seen the Alpha Course posters on buses, billboards, outside churches, even on TV? Millions of people have taken part in the Alpha course. Many have found answers to life’s most challenging questions. Alpha gives you the opportunity to explore the Christian faith in a relaxed setting over ten weekly sessions (see www.uk.alpha.org for details). Ever thought about finding out what all the fuss is about? Maybe 2010 is the year you will find out. Here is what some guests had to say after their Alpha experience. Barry: Eight years ago I was a very aggressive, argumentative atheist. I was quite horrible. I used to browbeat my Christian friends, argue them into the ground and eventually they just held their hands up and said ‘You really should do Alpha’. Two people told me that quite independently and then a month or two later I had this real desire to do an Alpha course so I found one. My wife told me afterwards that it was completely out of character. Since then, Jesus has made a huge difference in my life. I was a helper on the next course and then my wife came along. We both came to faith on the second course and now we just want to tell everyone about Jesus. Garry: I was a church– goer but I didn’t have any kind of relationship with Jesus.  I went on an Alpha course because I was going through a very painful divorce and a friend of mine suggested it to me. It was at Portsmouth Football Club. I didn’t really want to go to a church so I went to the football club and there was a guy there called Linvoy Primus who has since become a good friend of mine. On the course I learned how to forgive and six months later I went on a mission to India and was baptised on the beach. Mike: A year ago I wasn’t a Christian. I wouldn’t say I was an atheist but I wasn’t far off. I trained as a geologist many years ago and I’ve worked in science for 30 years, working on the impacts of climate change on the natural world. I  believed I could answer all life’s questions using scientific principles. That was until I met a girl in the US at New Year who challenged me to understand a little bit more about where she was coming from in life. I said ‘How do I do that?’ and she said ‘Oh we’ll find an Alpha Course for you in England’. She found one in Stamford in Lincolnshire and I started in January. I’ve now got a new outlook on life and I’ve been asked to join the Alpha team at the church where I did the course. Why Jesus? Check him out for yourself. |
